Some Things Deserve to Be Abandoned.
We praise perseverance so blindly that people can spend years proving loyalty to goals, identities and versions of life that are already gone.
There should be a loyalty program for refusing to let go. Ten years spent chasing a life that no longer fits and you earn a complimentary tote bag, three motivational quotes and the right to tell everyone you never quit.
We would probably sign up. Persistence has excellent public relations. It gets the movie montage, the swelling music and the final scene where pain turns out to have been a staircase in disguise. Walking away gets no soundtrack. It gets suspicious looks and a question delivered like a verdict: You gave up?
