I Have Outlived Some of My Certainties.
Changing my mind can feel like betraying the person I used to be, even when that person was wrong.
There are opinions I once defended with the confidence of a man who had confused volume with evidence. I do not remember all of them, which is probably mercy. Somewhere out there, however, are people who remember me being certain, and I would like to apologize to them before they locate screenshots.
We talk about changing a mind as though it is a simple intellectual transaction. New information enters. Old conclusion exits. The brain issues a revised memo, everybody updates their files and lunch continues as scheduled.
