Chronic illness can complicate sex without canceling desire, privacy, adulthood, or the right to be wanted without becoming somebody’s lesson.

There are two acceptable ways for the world to look at a body changed by chronic illness: clinically or inspirationally.

Clinically, the body becomes a list of symptoms, side effects, limitations and equipment. Inspirationally, it becomes a brave symbol staring thoughtfully toward a sunrise while some sentence about courage floats overhead.
